Bovine (an animal of the cattle group, which also includes buffaloes and bison.) Colostrum (the first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth, rich in antibodies.) was investigated as a source of biologically active molecules capable of stimulating (encouraging or arousing interest or enthusiasm) the growth of mammalian cells in culture and modifying the immune (protected or exempt, especially from an obligation or the effects of something) response in a murine (common household rats and mice)model. An extract prepared from bovine colostral whey (the watery part of milk that remains after the formation of curds.) by cation (a positively charged ion, i.e. one that would be attracted to the cathode in electrolysis.) exchange and re versed-phase chromatography (a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.)stimulated the growth of L6 rat myoblasts(An embryonic muscle cell which will develop into a muscle fibre) Balb/c-3T3 mouse fibroblasts (a cell in connective tissue which produces collagen and other fibres.) and BHK-21 baby hamster (a solitary burrowing rodent with a short tail and large cheek pouches for carrying food,) kidney cells with equal or greater potency than fetal bovine serum. Fractionation of the bovine colostral extract by gel-permeation chromatography in M-acetic acid identified a number of cell-growth factors for each cell type. Bovine colostral extract was compared with an ovine (relating to or resembling sheep) colostral whey preparation for its ability to modulate IgE antibody responses in mice. Doses of 8 and 4 mg/d of ovine colostral whey or bovine colostral extract specifically suppressed IgE antibody (a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen )responses, whereas at lower doses suppression did not occur. We conclude that bovine colostrum contains cell-growth factors as well as immunomodulatory (Capable of modifying or regulating one or more immune functions) factors that are able to regulate the IgE response in a heterologous species.
